Nigeria @54…..Great or Potentially Great?????????
On the first day of October, Nigeria celebrated her 54th anniversary of independence as a republic…..our nation, our beloved Nigeria!!! Across a myriad of news platforms so much has been said as regards Nigeria at 54..I was initially tempted to say nothing, keep my thoughts to myself and simply soak in I could access by way of Tv, radio, newspapers and social media on Nigeria @ 54. However I just got this strong feeling to put pen to paper and so here we go……………..
let me start by saying categorically that I believe in the Nigerian project. I believe that things MUST get better…I believe thing CAN get better. I do certainly know that there are many aspects of our nation that are not the way they should be…I know..I mean, look around you and there is so much to remind you that we , as a nation, have fallen behind in expected achievable development milestones. it has been a tough 54 years, no doubt.
Needless to say, to fix the nation Nigeria, there must be changes. The questions at this point would be kind of changes and where would the changes come from…………….hmmm…the Government??? The Armed forces??? The Judiciary?? the organized private sector??? the Churches??the Mosques? just where would these changes come from…and what type of changes would they be????????
my very simple response….YOU…yes, YOU!!!!!
The nation changes when we, you and I change. When we truly put the nation first, when we stop and don’t support impunity and abuse of power, when we get uncomfortable with corruption..do not give or receive bribes, when civil servants and those who work in our offices whether private or public sector, become totally accountable, when public servants like governors, ministers, local government Chairmen decide to commit to excellence in the discharge of their duties and mandates….when illegality and immorality in any form is resisted, when good people decide to stand up and be a major and significant part of governance, when politicians and artisans begin to truly have the fear of God……
You see, in a sense I don’t agree with well-meaning folks who say that Nigeria is great country…..my take is that Nigeria is NOT a great nation (yet) but has immense potentials to be great!!!!!!! and that greatness would continue to elude us if we don’t do the right things, imbibe the right values, plan for the future, develop our infrastructures ,protect our people etc…hear me…we would never be great if we do not do the things that amount to greatness. as I say, this means you and I committing to equity and justice, committing to care for every part and corner of Nigeria, committing to nation building, committing to doing the extra to attain excellence…
this is why I salute all those who are the right things now regardless of who is doing the wrong thing…that is why I celebrate those who give their prayer, energy and resources in one way or the other to get our beloved nation on the right track. You truly are nation builders.
lets all go back to the words of our national pledge with particular attention to the second stanza which i personally tag the “Prayer of Patriots”
Arise O’ Compatriots, Nigeria’s call obey
To serve our fatherland
With love and strength and faith
The labour of our heroes past
Shall never be in vain
To serve with heart and might
One nation bound in freedom, peace and unity
O God of Creation, direct our noble cause,
Guide (thou) our leaders right,
Help our youth the truth to know
In love and honesty to grow
And living just and true
Great lofty heights attain
To build a nation where peace and justice shall reign
deep and profound………….
I really really believe that Nigeria shall become one of the world’s most desirable nations in our time….I do believe.
lets all put Nigeria on the PATHWAY OF CHAMPIONS
God bless you, God Bless us all
God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria
