Great morning,Champ..

What a great day to be alive…today,lets talk about the art and skill of negotiating.

Negotiation is a method by which people settle differences. It is a process by which compromise or agreement is reached while avoiding argument…..sounds easy??? Well, its not that easy, really. Understand that everyone is assumed to seek the best position for themselves or for their interests and Negotiation is how different parties arrive at a perceived mutually beneficial position with the other party or parties. We negotiate with our business partners, we negotiate with our spouses and children…yes…children….

In any disagreement, individuals understandably aim to achieve the best possible outcome for their position (or perhaps an organisation they represent). However, the principles of fairness, seeking mutual benefit and maintaining a relationship are the keys to a successful outcome.

so there is the theory….but my thinking is  since negotiating is something we do quite a lot therefore we might just as well pay more attention to how we negotiate…… ready???  Okay , lets go

There are a few factors to take into consideration when doing any form or level of negotiations, namely;

Attitude….there is the RIGHT attitude which reflects openness, willingness to be considerate and objective as well a charisma which endears the opposite party to you. the right attitude leaves the other party comfortable enough to pay attention and consider the information that you have put forward.

Information….thou must know! its pure suicide to go into a negotiation when you have limited knowledge or sparse information as regards the subject matter. you simply MUST know enough to turn or tilt the tables in your favour….more than that you must know more than the other party knows…

Communication…..yes you need the right attitude… know to KNOW..but guess what..(my fav) need to know how to serve what you know….you need to be able to lay out the information you have in the best possible way that gets the other party comfortable enough to admit, or unable to deny, your position. that’s communication.

These factors usually determine how well the negotiation process goes.

those factors are a necessary ingredient in the outlined process of Negotiation listed below;

  1. Preparation
  2. Discussion
  3. Clarification of goals
  4. Negotiation towards a WIN-WIN situation
  5. Agreement
  6. Implementation of a course of action

I will expatiate on the 6 processes in another piece soon. yea, that is a promise!

Now looking back, can you see how totally unprepared you were for that negotiation that you had???
